Each Tuesday throughout April, we’ve highlighted eco-friendly coffee roasters who are making a difference with their sustainability efforts. For our final Brew Day of Earth Month 2022, we’re brewing up a batch of Nicaragua Segovia from Tiny Footprint Coffee. This is a bold, dark roast that’s brightened up by notes of apricot, fig, and spice.

“You drink coffee, we plant trees” is the motto of Tiny Footprint Coffee - the world’s first carbon-negative coffee. How does that work? It takes 4 lbs of CO2 to produce and distribute 1 lb of their coffee. They donate a portion of the proceeds to fund reforestation in Ecuador’s Mindo cloud forest for every pound sold. Over time, these trees will remove 54 lbs of CO2 from the atmosphere and remove more CO2 than emitted.
Sourcing is also at the forefront of their sustainability work. They source beans that are not only shade-grown but also organic certified, and most often fair-trade, or Rain Forest Alliance certified. They also purchase coffee from small, family-owned farms. All roasting takes place in their Minneapolis, MN roastery, where they’re working to make the entire roastery carbon negative.
