Get the Most out of Your Grinder

For brewing on a Moccamaster coffee brewer, the ECBC-approved setting is 5, although you may find your ideal grind to be somewhere in the range of 4-6. We recommend a medium-coarse grind, which should look like rough sand or coarse sea salt.

Your coffee grinder's burrs are built to last! On average, they can grind up to 550 lbs of coffee beans before needing to be changed. If you make a daily 40-ounce carafe of coffee using the recommended formula of 69 grams per 40 oz, that's about 55 lbs of coffee per year, meaning your burrs should last for ten years or more.

The markings on the glass grounds container are not specific measurements, but rather personal reference points. As you become more familiar with the grinder, you’ll begin to note which line corresponds to the amount of grounds you typically grind.

The KM5 has been expertly crafted for coffee brewing. It offers a range of grind sizes, allowing you to achieve the perfect grind for a variety of brewing methods, from the medium-fine grind required for Aeropress to the coarse grind necessary for cold brew. However, it is important to note that the KM5 is not designed for espresso grinding and may not produce the very fine particulate size required for that method.

A coffee grinder approved by the European Coffee Brewing Centre (ECBC) must produce consistent, high-quality coffee grounds. The ECBC evaluates coffee grinders across criteria ranging from grinding quality to ease of use. These criteria include:

A coffee's quality can degrade if heated during the grinding process. Grinders must keep the coffee at a consistent temperature, never heating it.

CONSISTENT GRIND SIZE

For even extraction while brewing, the grinder must produce grounds in uniform particle size with minimal variations.

GRIND SIZE DISTRIBUTION

The grinder must produce a consistent grind size at all settings – from fine to coarse.

REPEATABILITY
